Workshop: “Deep Sea Mining – Contributing to the elaboration of a Belgian Policy”
June 27, 2018
On the 5th of June 2018, a workshop on deep sea mining in areas beyond national jurisdiction was organized by the Federal Public Service Economy, SMEs, Self-employed and Energy, in collaboration with the Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment, the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, the Federal Public Planning Service Science Policy and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.
This workshop aims to elucidate the state of art the different perspectives of deep sea mining of polymetallic nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Zone, including the concerns of both the industry and the environmental NGOs. The presentations and debate will serve as input to Belgian policy makers to elaborate the Belgian position on this matter for the next ISA Council and Assembly meetings in summer 2018 and to further develop a deep sea mining policy for Belgium.
