Press Release
On 29 September, 2017, DEME celebrated the naming ceremony of the dual fuel powered dredger ‘Scheldt River’. The Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger ‘Scheldt River’, was officially named today at the DEME head office in Zwijndrecht, Belgium. The dredger was named by Mrs Veerle Hegge, the wife of Mr Bart De Wever, Mayor of Antwerp.
For this occasion, GSR invited the SG of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), Mr Michael Lodge to address the progress of the development of an exploitation code following the Implementing Agreement of the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (1994). The UNCLOS convention, ratified by 168 member States, is the basis upon which stakeholders are now deliberating on an exploitation code, which will allow deep sea mining to take place in international waters.
Besides presenting Mr Lodge with the largest nodule recovered in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone at 4500m water depth, the Patania I, GSR’s first tracked soil testing device was on display.
